A new signature kitchen

by Grégoire de Lafforest

Those who love pioneering kitchen and interior designs, certainly know the signature kitchen collection of the Belgian
design company Obumex. For over 20 years, Obumex has been entering into prestigious collaboration agreements
with international top designers to create unique limited edition kitchens that challenge the limits of imagination
and the technical and ergonomic conventions. Names such as John Pawson, Joseph Dirand, Bruno Moinard,
Glenn Sestig and Vincent Van Duysen in the past already brought their personal interpretation of the kitchen
concept under the Obumex flag.

“COOPERATE ON WORLD-CLASS SIGNATURE COLLECTIONS IS THE MOST FANTASTIC CROWNING OF OUR WORK.”
Geert Ostyn, CEO Obumex

The latest addition to the collection is unveiled today and can be admired in the brand-new showroom of Obumex
Gent. This time it is a special design of the French designer and interior architect Grégoire de Lafforest. This internationally
recognized designer earned his spurs at amongst others Bruno Moinard, Noé Duchaufour and Gilles
et Boissier, where he could cooperate on prestigious projects such as the Baccarat hotel in New York and design
projects for Cartier and Veuve Clicquot. Since 2016, de Lafforest is the house designer at the famous fashion house
Hermès.

THE KITCHEN AS READABLE LIBRARY CONCEPT
With his signature creation for Obumex, Grégoire de Lafforest developed a radically contemporary take on both
the function and the design of the kitchen that nowadays – more than ever before - has become a real living space.
While the functional technical elements (devices, etc.) disappear out of sight in his design, de Lafforest indeed
pays ample attention to the objects which, in a certain sense, collect themselves in a kitchen: decorative objects,
(cooking) books, accessories, …
Inspired by the idea of a library, the designer gives space to these objects in a re-invented version of the niche in
which traditionally the sink is located. By placing many small details as in a display window, the kitchen undergoes
a visual and functional metamorphosis and becomes a readable cataloguing of the personal taste and style of the
user.

“MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, THE KITCHEN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LIVING SPACE IN A HOUSE. INSTEAD OF
TECHNICAL ELEMENTS, PEOPLE WANT TO SEE THE OBJECTS WHICH GIVE COLOUR AND AMBIENCE TO THEIR
LIVES.”
Grégoire de Lafforest

For the practical elaboration and dimensioning of this new kitchen concept, Grégoire de Lafforest entered into an
intensive cooperation with the specialist-craftsmen in the Obumex workshop in Staden, West Flanders. The result is
a unique combination of creativity and craftsmanship, with seemingly endless possibilities of personalisation and finishing.
No need to look out for grips or handles as these have been substituted according to the designer’s explicit
wish by an especially created invisible handle system underneath the drawers and closet doors.

“IT WAS A PRIVILEGE TO COOPERATE WITH SPECIALIST-CRAFTSMEN WHO ARE REAL EXPERTS IN THEIR JOBS.
THANKS TO THEIR EXPERTISE, I WAS ABLE TO REALISE A KITCHEN IDEA THAT IS INCOMPARABLE IN THE FIELD OF
CUSTOM WORK, COLOURS AND TEXTURES.”
Grégoire de Lafforest
